The short version

Rights and healthcare routes vary across the UK. Start by identifying whether you are in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, then the situation and responsible organisation. The Equality Act disability definition applies in Great Britain, while Northern Ireland has different legislation. Eligibility must be considered individually.

The usual mix-up

“A diagnosis alone proves every adjustment or treatment entitlement.” A diagnosis should be taken seriously, but eligibility must be considered individually.

Limits

This page is general information, not legal advice. Personal experience varies. Claims are dated, jurisdiction-limited where relevant, and should be corrected when stronger evidence changes the conclusion.

What should happen

This site’s advocacy position: when an established ADHD treatment plan is interrupted, the patient should receive a reasoned clinical decision, clear ownership and a continuity/safety plan rather than being left to navigate an ownerless gap.

Urgent or crisis routes may appropriately address immediate risk without resolving the separate specialist treatment-continuity question. Where that gap appears, it is a system-design problem to measure, not proof of hidden intent in any organisation and never a reason to delay emergency care.

A diagnosis does not create an entitlement to a particular medicine. It should, however, be taken seriously in clinical decision-making, and disabled people may be entitled to reasonable adjustments where ordinary processes place them at a substantial disadvantage.
