Start where you are. Each route ends in something usable.
The machinery that ADHD medicines act on is made of a small number of parts: an enzyme that makes dopamine, a pump that stores it, a release step, transporters that clear it, enzymes that break it down, and receptors that read it. That short list is the same in every textbook. What varies between people — and what makes ADHD hard to pin down — is how those parts are built, tuned and coordinated across development and across a day.
This guide is organised the same way: a few clear entrances at the top, then progressively finer detail, until each route ends at a decision, a question or a piece of evidence you can check. Start with how ADHD works, or with what to do when treatment stops.
The guide combines sourced explanations, documented accounts and open research questions. It is not an exhaustive assessment of every cause or treatment.
